Scion kicks off the next incarnation of its  national art tour this weekend in Los Angeles. Installation 6: VIDEO features an all-video lineup which will visit several cities over the coming months. Rob Abeyta, Jr is a dope visual artist &  art director who has worked with companies such as Girl Skateboard, Nike, Stussy,  and on projects with Estevan Oriol and Mister Cartoon.He has published a book with Upper Playground, and recently participated in Scion’s Installation 5 national art tour. In this video he discusses the tour and more about his background, starting out by designing punk rock flyers, and his influences.

For the fifth year, Scion auctions off an unprecedented collection of contemporary works to benefit charities and
non-profits that support independent artistic expression.  The Installation 5 Tour collection features literal and non-literal self-portraits of varying cost by international art luminaries, with 100 percent of the proceeds aiding Creative Capital, the premier national artist support organization (www.creativecapital.org).  Audiences around the world can bid online at ArtNet: http://www.ArtNet.com/scion.html.  The auction closes on Sept. 30. Artwork values range from $100 to $17,000 and bidding will begin at 25% of the art’s estimated worth.

Today I had the opportunity to get a preview of the Papershapers show opening in Culver City tomorrow. The artists were in the process of getting all their pieces together so this is just a wee taste of what will be on display. The show features unique works from Ana Serrano, Annie Vought, Brian Dettmer, Hunter Stabler, Peter Callesen, Polly Verity, Richard Sweeney, Mu Pan and Ryohei Tanaka.

Scion has a great show opening this weekend at their Culver City gallery. Papershapers is curated by Giant Robot and features the paper craft of Shin Tanaka, Ana Serrano, Annie Vought, Brian Dettmer, Hunter Stabler, Peter Callesen, Polly Verity, Richard Sweeney, Mu Pan and Ryohei Tanaka.

The opening reception takes place April 11, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.  at the Scion Installation L.A. Space, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, CA 90232.  The show will run until May 2.

Whatever your weapon, you can win a trip to Los Angeles to meet the king of the paper robots – Mr. Shin Tanaka himself! Scion has partnered with indie funk and soul label Daptone Records to launch Scion CD Sampler Vol. 19 – Daptone Records Remixed, a double CD-set compilation including nine exclusive remixes of various artists, along with the nine original recordings.

In keeping with the spirit of supporting independent music initiatives that underpin the Scion A/V label, all proceeds from this release will go directly back to the artists on the Daptone Records label. Scion Presents “Want2BSquare” Art Shows in Los Angeles and New York to Promote the All-New 2008 Scion xB
-Gallery Shows Feature Original Artwork from: Dalek, Matzu, Maya Hayuk, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, UPSO, and Freddi C-

LOS ANGELES (March, 2007) – Scion has called upon seven dynamic contemporary and internationally-recognized artists to create original artwork inspired by and in celebration of the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle. The artwork will be displayed at “Want2BSquare” art shows in New York and Los Angeles, and carry the theme of squares, boxes and cubes to follow the xB’s boxy style.

“The ‘Want2BSquare’ show is a great opportunity to blend the creative art world with the launch of the second generation xB,” said Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales promotions manager. “Scion will continue to promote artistic creativity in special gallery executions like this.”

Each artist was asked to paint on canvases of two square sizes, 48″ x 48″ and 24″ x 24″, which were then assembled into cubes that will be suspended from the ceiling at various heights throughout the gallery. Smaller cubes will display the artwork on the outside, while the larger cubes will show artwork on the inside enabling the viewer to gaze up into the artwork from directly beneath the box.

Artists involved in the show include:
• Dalek, creator of the famed Space Monkeys (www.dalekart.com);
• Matzu, a Japanese artist (www.matzu.net);
• Maya Hayuk, a classic-rock-punk-folk-rainbow-peace-freak-out artist (www.mayahayuk.com);
• Sage Vaughn, a Los Angeles based artist (www.sagevaughn.com);
• Kelsey Brookes, scientist-turned-illustrator (www.kelseybrookes.com);
• UPSO, publisher of the Art Annual “Faesthetic” (www.upso.org); and
• Freddi C, founder of the Streetwise art series, (www.freddic.com).

Guests will be able to meet the artists at both shows and have the opportunity to purchase the original art work. All proceeds from the sales will go directly to the artists.

The Want2BSquare art shows will take place in New York on April 6th at Skylight Studios (275 Hudson Street) and in Los Angeles on April 21st at the Scion Installation L.A. gallery (3521 Helms Avenue, at National). Each event will also feature live DJ entertainment. Cosmo Baker and DJ Ayers from The Rub DJs will perform at the New York events, while the Los Angeles show will host DJ Ramses and DJ Denimslinger.

The art shows are part of an xB pre-launch strategy anchored by the recently launched Want2BSquare.com site. The site was developed by Scion’s creative agency, ATTIK. The “square” universe is represented inside an engaging, entertaining, multidimensional web experience where visitors are encouraged to explore an expansive world, play games against other visitors, view a wealth of video content celebrating the xB’s boxy shape, and discover other quirky experiences.
