Andreya Triana’s album Lost Where I Belong was one of 2010′s gems. You may have heard her distinctive vocals previously on works with Flying Lotus (“Tea Leaf Dancers“), Bonobo, Aaron Jerome and more. Lost Where I Belong is her solo debut, and while retaining some elements of the experimental, it’s also a very warm, kinda folksy-jazzy album. “Far Closer” is taken from that album and gets a vibrant working over from LA’s latest digital beatsmith, Tokimonsta. She applies a tougher edge to the track without losing any of its original organic warmth.

Hot damn. This track is like, whoa. Seriously though, 1-O.A.K. did a ridiculous job of turning Little Dragon’s “Blinking Pigs” into a beautiful, hip-hop n’ jazz inflected head-nodder. 1-O.A.K, is Oakland’s Brandon McFarland – a vocalist, musician and producer who is part of the Bay Area Collective the Honor Roll. He entered this remix, titled  the “God Made Me Funky Remix” in the FILTER remix contest  and it’s no surprise that he emerged the winner.

Well dang, talk about coming outta nowhere. An email landed in my inbox over the holidays with a link to another free producer mixtape/compilation thingy. I dutifully downloaded it but only recently got around to listening. Well I’m glad I didn’t let this one slip through the net. Stereotree is a French blog that seems to be a purveyor of dope progressive music. They have created a series of compilations, one of which, Beat Heroes is dedicated to dope producers. This particular volume is headed up by French beatmaker Tayreeb who, as it turns out, is amazing. His tracks are edgy, hip-hop-y, electronic-y bangers and you can download 10 of them for free.

He’s also done a nice remix of Jazzanova’s “I Can See”:

So basically, sleep on this guy at your peril.

So as Common prepares to release Universal Mind Control, an album that I suspect will be either loved or hated in a similar way to Electric Circus, Beatnick & K-Salaam have put together a retrospective that reminds us what we loved about Common in the first place. Kidulthood is a cult classic movie in the UK, detailing in gritty fashion the lives of London’s teenaged yoof. Drugs, sex, violence and paryting are the order of the day, delivered in a stylized and powerful way by BIFA Award winning director, Menhaj Huda.The movie just got its Stateside release on DVD and in celebration, producer/composer The Angel, who scored the film has made available a remix to the movie’s grime-inspired opening theme.

The film score itself is worthy of note. In tandem with the movie, it brilliantly underlines the guts and drama of the storyline, heightening the atmosphere as any good score should. But as an album in itself there are plenty of great tracks – tough, grimey breaks alongside edgy hip-hop, touches of drum n bass, and plenty of moody soundscapes.

So I think this autotune thingamabob madness that’s going on is for the birds and am sad that Kanye has jumped on that bandwagon with such gusto. Producers just need to stop with it already. Please. And why is Kanye “singing” like his jaw is still wired shut? Young man needs to enunciate.

But having said that, I AM enjoying this LMFAO remix of Love Lockdown. I think it’s way better than the original. They took the lyrical concept and ran with it, adding some way better vocals and a bangin’ beat.I will give Kanye props for making the tracks available on his blog for folks to mess with though. That’s cool.
