At first listen, Jack Splash’s lyrics are glitzy & inspired by living the life. But with an open ear, the differences between the mixtape and Jack’s previous work with Plantlife are apparent. Before the glamor there was the grind, evidenced on “Baatin.” There was the study of musical styles that you hear in the words & sounds used for “Charlie Wilson” & “Rick James.” If you listen closely, you’ll hear the words and sounds from the guy who had a hand in finding Keys and crafting a Legend. The guy who shaped the sounds of Missy and Jamie. The guy who influenced anybody famous enough to go by one name.

Now, after manning the boards and creating for so many others, it’s time to meet Jack. Watch for the forthcoming album Technology and Love Might Save Us All… coming spring 2010 on J Records. For now, enjoy Heir To The Throne Vol. 1.

Jack Splash returns with another free album download. This one is significantly better than the previous freebie, Heir To The Throne,  and demonstrates his production chops. I’m curious as to how his official album will sound. He seems to have ditched the funk-soul persona in favor of a more ‘gully’ (remember that word?!) hip-hop persona. Seems like he’s still trying to find the best identity for his musical style, and while there’s nothing wrong with reinventing yourself and keeping things fresh, it’s hard to get a grasp on what Jack Splash actually stands for. Today documents the release of Jack Splash’s, King Of The Beats, the second of three mixtapes to be released before the much-anticipated full-length album and film, Technology And Love Might Save Us All… out in May on J-Records.In the past few months, Jack Splash has bombarded the music world with 90′s throwback rap tracks and futuristic synth-pop hooks.  King Of The Beats reminds you that Jack is capable of such songs, but also takes you further down the rabbit hole to reveal instrumental tracks like, “Disko Labyrinth” and “The Funhouse Has Mirrors,” that sound as if they came straight off a Lamont Dozier album.

It’s no question why Jack Splash decided to call the second installment of mixtapes, King Of The Beats.  Not only has Jack Splash compiled an impressive amount of songs to release before an official album, every song is an original composition created by the man himself.   Each track has been carefully crafted and produced by the same hands that created music for such talented artists as Jennifer Hudson, T-Pain, Estelle, Jamie Foxx, Missy Elliott, Jazmine Sullivan, Shakira, Britney Spears and more.  Truly, King of the Beats.

TheCouchSessions.com just released a free mixtape Tribute to Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon. It’s no secret that I’m a huge Little Dragon fan so I’m lovin’ this concept. They’ve put together a retrospective of sorts including some of her work with Koop, guest spots with  Ge-ology, classic Little Dragon tracks and more. The Couch Sessions, the Internet’s leading Alternative Urban music portal, announces it’s first mixtape, A Tribute to Yukimi Nagano, focusing on the the trailblazing career of the Swedish vocalist and lead singer of the group Little Dragon. In addition to her work with the world-renowned group, Yukmi has a long track record of incredible music, mixing her loves of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, and R&B. Her sultry voice has graced projects from all over the world, from Swedish Jazz duo Koop and Japan’s Shuya Okino, to Brooklyn’s Ge-ology. Coming on the heels of Little Dragon’s much anticipated return to Liv Nightclub in DC on November 22nd and their latest album Machine Dreams, A Tribute to Yukmi Nagano will introduce listeners to rare and unreleased tracks that will surprise and delight her true fans.

Behind the boards of the mix is no other than Washington, DC’s own DJ Supa Kool DJ Uncle Q, creator of underground hip-hop party Uncle Q’s Living Room and the man behind Internet sensations The Maxwell Mix and The Raphael Saadiq Mixtape. A majority of the tracks were hand picked by Winston “Stone” Ford, creator of The Couch Sessions, and Yvette Travillian, most notably of production company SheWorks Entertainment. The mixtape cover was designed by none other than rising DC graphic artist and photographer Neil MacLean.
