This is a fun little video taken from the WorldWide Awards ceremony. Evidently Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma won Album of the Year. This conversation happened backstage where Gilles Peterson and Thom Yorke talk to FlyLo about his award and how environment affects how you response to music. They discuss dubstep artist Burial in particular. I think it’s true that certain sounds or certain types of music make sense in particular environments more than others – what do you think? Finally, the video everyone has been waiting for…..Bilal’s “Levels,” directed by super producer Flying Lotus a.k.a. Steve Ellison . Lotus is making his directorial debut and this marks as sort of a Plug Research reunion, where his debut 1983 was released. The visually, stunning video was inspired by the Bilal track and also features cameo appearances by Erykah Badu and Shafiq Husayn (who produced the track).

Lotus recently discussed the concept of the video saying, “I originally wanted to keep visual themes with another video from my last LP called ‘mmhmm’ off of my last album. It featured Thundercat as an intergalactic bass player in a super strange world created by ‘Special Problems’. Since Thundercat was part of this song, I thought it could be fun to continue the visual style and feel of this space opera. In the end you have this crazy video made of so much mixed media, geek dreams and lots of love.” This is the third video off of Bilal’s latest album Airtight’s Revenge .

New Flying Lotus tracks are always welcome and this one is no exception (spotted at Urb). Preceding his upcoming Warp release Cosmogramma scheduled for May, “Quakes” brings you some classic Flying Lotus flavor. This particular track will not be on the album, but can be found on the Warp compilation 2010. You can take a listen to, and even download some more tracks from that compilation over yonder.

Their live shows have included forward-thinking musicians such as Taylor McFerrin, Sarah White, Flying Lotus and others in the business of future music. It’s taken me too long to get around to writing this post, but now that I’m on kind of an instrumental kick, it seems appropriate. Here’s another great producer you need to be up on, Pursuit Grooves. If you like Flying Lotus, 14KT and those type of folks, you’ll dig Pursuit Grooves. She was kind enough to send me two of her albums which each have a distinct vibe and demonstrate her versatility as a producer. Wild Art Forestry is the more experimental/abstract one of the two albums, although the tracks still have a solid bump to them. My favorite however is the Fun Like Passion album which has a funkier vibe.
