So I think this autotune thingamabob madness that’s going on is for the birds and am sad that Kanye has jumped on that bandwagon with such gusto. Producers just need to stop with it already. Please. And why is Kanye “singing” like his jaw is still wired shut? Young man needs to enunciate.
But having said that, I AM enjoying this LMFAO remix of Love Lockdown. I think it’s way better than the original. They took the lyrical concept and ran with it, adding some way better vocals and a bangin’ beat.I will give Kanye props for making the tracks available on his blog for folks to mess with though. That’s cool.

This is a Nike-sponsored video of Kissey Asplund’s “Silverlake” track - note the prominent shots of the Nike Air Max 90. According to Mr. Dee Phunk, this vid is part of a series where Nike profiles select European musicians. Anyway the song is pretty cool and the vid gives you a little glimpse into the life of Kissey. And if you ever get to see her perform live, you should absolutely check her out. She did a brief set at Strictly Social back in April and was totally captivating.

So D’Angelo is back. Allegedly. Yeah, I’m cynical. After all, it’s been….how long?! Well anyway, here’s a kinda new song from the man, the myth, the legend. It’s kinda new because it’s a remake of his 1996 song which can be found on the Space Jam movie soundtrack of all things. I mean, it’s being billed as a “remake” but since I haven’t heard the version on Space Jam, I can’t say for sure if it’s actually any different, or if the record company is just dredging up less well-known tracks in order to get D back in the spotlight. This version of the track is taken from the recent Best So Far compilation and is supposedly preparing us for an album to be released in 2009. Fingers crossed he can stay off the crack -or whatever it was that has had him off the scene for all this time - long enough to follow through with the promised album. In any case, this is a fine slice of D’Angelo-style soul and I won’t say no to that.
D’Angelo “I Found My Smile Again”:
I’m a big Conya Doss fan. I think she’s one of soul music’s most overlooked talents. She puts out consistently great, classy and authentic soul music. Still is her most recent album (I believe her fourth) and this is the new single from it, “What I’d Do.” Check the video below, and then head over to ConyaDoss.com to scoop up copies of her CDs.

Thanks to GiantStep I just got turned on to European producer Sepalot who recently released an album on Compost Records Red Handed. Haven’t heard the whole thing yet, but this track “Did It Again” definitely perked my ears up. It’s hip-hop, but not as we know it. As one might expect from the combination of a European hip-hop producer with an eclectic label such as Compost, Sepalot throws a unique twist on things and brings a bangin’ electro-funk-hop beat over which Saigon unfortunately only does a so-so job. But anyway, check out the track for yourself:
