Amplive -Zion I- SantogoldZion I’s Amplive has been on a remixing bender as of late. Starting with his reworking of Radiohead’s In Rainbows album, and continuing with a spree of remixes of the likes of Santogold, Jamie Lidell, Public Enemy, Tokyo Police Club, MGMT and more.

Here’s a couple of my personal faves to check out. You can find more at his Myspace.

Zion I will be releasing a long-awaited new album, The Takeover, in January via Gold Dust Records. In the meantime they will be releasing a mixtape - and by mixtape, I mean an actual cassette tape, called The Search & The Seizure mixtape which sees the duo re-working and re-interpreting a range of hip-hop classics on the A-Side, with the B-Side focusing on electro and indie-rock favorites.  The Santogold track above is taken from this release. Also from this release is Zion I’s version of “Gotsta Chill” feat. Talib Kweli.Grab that one HERE

Strictly Social had another great night at LA’s Little Temple Bar on October 22nd. Electric performances from each of Replife, Michelle Shaprow and Les Brown & The Now demonstrated the spirit of Strictly Social. Resident DJ Destroyer along with DJ Myxzlplix and DJ Kaleem kept the vibe flowing with their on-point selections. A birthday party was also in the house so a memorable time was had by all. Check out Nu-Soul Mag for further coverage and pics.

Miguel is an LA-based artist who was  signed to Jive Records earlier this year. He’s also appeared on Blu’s Below The Heavens and the Johnson&Jonson album (under the name Jontel). And I learned via FreshSelects that he co-wrote Musiq’s “If You Leave” and Usher’s “Revolver”. He recently dropped a free ep/mixtape which is pretty hot and filled with radio-friendly but still a little edgy, R&B. My fave track is probably “Dig”.

Anthony Valadez - Go -Record BreakinLos Angelenos know DJ Anthony Valadez as one of the hardest working DJs in town. He holds down several residencies at spots like Little Temple and Zanzibar. He has opened for the likes of Les Nubians, Ben Harper, Nikka Costa, Talib Kweli, Meshell Ndegeocello, Eric Roberson, Van Hunt, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Aloe Blacc, Platinum Pied Pipers, Doug E Fresh and much more. He can also now be found on the tastemaking radio station KCRW.

In addition to his vinyl-juggling schedule, Vala also finds time to produce some dope tracks. He has remixed projects for Ammon Contact,  Build an Ark, and was featured on Mochilla’s Keepintime Soundtrack alongside Daedelus,Nobody, Cut Chemist, J Rocc and much more. Now, in conjunction with the homie DJ Junior, he has just released a single on Record Breakin’ Music entitled “Go” featuring Wendisue and John Robinson. You can cop the limited edition 7″ single here. Oh yea, and he did the cover art for it as well. Take a listen:

I stumbled upon this recently on the internets. A new (to my ears) Little Dragon track “Infinite Love”. In reality it looks like this track has been floating around for a few months, I’m just late to the game. But oh well. If you’ve read this blog for a while you’ll know that I’m fairly obsessed with Little Dragon, so anything new from them is welcome to my ears. This track was included in an online campaign by Cartier called Love, and it’s a good midtempo slice of Little Dragon-esque electro-y soul.  You can download it below. Sadly the only version seems to be in 96kbps, but better than nothing eh?

I’m just discovering this rather old track and album for the first time. Modern Sleeping is the brainchild of one Cousin Jacob, whose real identity I shall not reveal, but suffice to say I’m mad at him for not sharing this with me sooner. Ha. Anyways, this particular track “Tax Cut” features the eclectic-ly chilled Luz Mob who is way overdue some new material as well. It’s a dreamily relaxed downtempo track and if you check out the album Positions & Practices For Better Living you’ll find more downtempo goodness created with real instruments (!) and some nice guest vocals courtesy of Pyeng Threadgill.

Muhsinah - The Oscillations: SineThe very dope Muhsinah has just dropped a digital release The Oscillations: Sine which looks like it will be followed by The Oscillations: Triangle. According to the discography on her site she released an EP called The Oscillations back in 2005 so I’m not sure if this is 100% new material, or perhaps an extension of that previous work. In any case it’s now available on iTunes, Emusic and the like so go checkit. Here’s a little taste - check out the video below for “Construction”.

New R&B From Dionyza

DionyzaThe daughter of singer/songwriters Michael and Brenda Sutton, Dionyza has some family history to live up to! She brings things full circle nicely on this track “I Told Myself” which features a sample, best known to most as the one Kanye West used on his track for Jay-Z & Scarface “Guess Who’s Back.” However that sample was taken from a song originally written by Dionyza’s parents,”Sunrise” and was recorded back in the 70s by The Originals. Take a listen below and also check out her myspace. A video for this song is expected soon and her album Quite Like Me is due out in the not-too-distant future…
