Alumni of URB’s Next 100 feature, Black Stone Theatre Collective are making old school soul, funk and disco sound good as new on their album Music For A Saturday Evening. Producer Andy C is the mastermind behind it all and he is joined by a selection of Chi-town vocalists - Keanna Johnson, Tunji, Yaw, and Zzaje. The album is well-crafted from start to finish and has a timeless feel to it. Check out some tracks below, as well as a free bonus track “Sexyness.”

Brittany Bosco is a progressive soul diva out of Savannah, GA, and honestly that’s about as much as I know about her except that her quite excellent EP “Spectrum” is available for free download and has been creating quite some buzz just recently. Her sound easily traverses terrain from progressive, space-age soul (eg “Glitch”, “City of Nowhere”) to a sound rooted more obviously in classic funk and soul such as “8-Trak” and “It Was You.” She pulls it all together with a natural ease - this lady is the real deal. Grab the Spectrum below and stay tuned for more from Ms. Bosco.

*Ok, hipsters, blipsters and all you cool kids, cover your eyes, you’re not gonna like what I’m about to say.* I’m a little ambivalent about these Proton dudes. They’re on the come-up out of the ATL scene and definitely making some noise. They have some hot tracks but their lyrical content is just a little, well, eh, and while that can be overlooked pretty easily by a nice flow on a dope track, after a few too many tracks of it, it just gets a little stale.
*K, you can continue reading….*
That said, my picks from this mixtape are the tracks with Janelle Monae, Jessica Tonder and Amanda Diva.

Los Angelenos know DJ Anthony Valadez as one of the hardest working DJs in town. He holds down several residencies at spots like Little Temple and Zanzibar. He has opened for the likes of Les Nubians, Ben Harper, Nikka Costa, Talib Kweli, Meshell Ndegeocello, Eric Roberson, Van Hunt, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Aloe Blacc, Platinum Pied Pipers, Doug E Fresh and much more. He can also now be found on the tastemaking radio station KCRW.
In addition to his vinyl-juggling schedule, Vala also finds time to produce some dope tracks. He has remixed projects for Ammon Contact, Build an Ark, and was featured on Mochilla’s Keepintime Soundtrack alongside Daedelus,Nobody, Cut Chemist, J Rocc and much more. Now, in conjunction with the homie DJ Junior, he has just released a single on Record Breakin’ Music entitled “Go” featuring Wendisue and John Robinson. You can cop the limited edition 7″ single here. Oh yea, and he did the cover art for it as well. Take a listen:

I stumbled upon this recently on the internets. A new (to my ears) Little Dragon track “Infinite Love”. In reality it looks like this track has been floating around for a few months, I’m just late to the game. But oh well. If you’ve read this blog for a while you’ll know that I’m fairly obsessed with Little Dragon, so anything new from them is welcome to my ears. This track was included in an online campaign by Cartier called Love, and it’s a good midtempo slice of Little Dragon-esque electro-y soul. You can download it below. Sadly the only version seems to be in 96kbps, but better than nothing eh?

Organized by DJ Destroyer of Soul Union, Norman Mayers of Nu-Soul Magazine, and Lucy Beer of Elemental Consulting, this night if “Eclectic Soul Fusion” aims to provide a non-traditional perspective on soul by fusing genres and styles. With recent events in New York City and Atlanta, the brand has begun to spread beyond its original home. Artists that have performed at Strictly Social include Sy Smith, Anthony David, Lina, Peter Hadar, Jimi James, Maya Azucena, and Kissey Asplund.
I’m just discovering this rather old track and album for the first time. Modern Sleeping is the brainchild of one Cousin Jacob, whose real identity I shall not reveal, but suffice to say I’m mad at him for not sharing this with me sooner. Ha. Anyways, this particular track “Tax Cut” features the eclectic-ly chilled Luz Mob who is way overdue some new material as well. It’s a dreamily relaxed downtempo track and if you check out the album Positions & Practices For Better Living you’ll find more downtempo goodness created with real instruments (!) and some nice guest vocals courtesy of Pyeng Threadgill.
The new Foreign Exchange album Leave It All Behind dropped last week, and it is definitely a must-have. The video for the first single “Daykeeper” featuring Muhsinah just debuted on Okayplayer, and here it is for your enjoyment…
The very dope Muhsinah has just dropped a digital release The Oscillations: Sine which looks like it will be followed by The Oscillations: Triangle. According to the discography on her site she released an EP called The Oscillations back in 2005 so I’m not sure if this is 100% new material, or perhaps an extension of that previous work. In any case it’s now available on iTunes, Emusic and the like so go checkit. Here’s a little taste - check out the video below for “Construction”.
