Kidulthood is a cult classic movie in the UK, detailing in gritty fashion the lives of London’s teenaged yoof. Drugs, sex, violence and paryting are the order of the day, delivered in a stylized and powerful way by BIFA Award winning director, Menhaj Huda.The movie just got its Stateside release on DVD and in celebration, producer/composer The Angel, who scored the film has made available a remix to the movie’s grime-inspired opening theme.

The film score itself is worthy of note. In tandem with the movie, it brilliantly underlines the guts and drama of the storyline, heightening the atmosphere as any good score should. But as an album in itself there are plenty of great tracks - tough, grimey breaks alongside edgy hip-hop, touches of drum n bass, and plenty of moody soundscapes.
The Angel is currently working on a new artist album, so stay tuned for more news on that.

Alumni of URB’s Next 100 feature, Black Stone Theatre Collective are making old school soul, funk and disco sound good as new on their album Music For A Saturday Evening. Producer Andy C is the mastermind behind it all and he is joined by a selection of Chi-town vocalists - Keanna Johnson, Tunji, Yaw, and Zzaje. The album is well-crafted from start to finish and has a timeless feel to it. Check out some tracks below, as well as a free bonus track “Sexyness.”

Zion I will be releasing a long-awaited new album, The Takeover, in January via Gold Dust Records. In the meantime they will be releasing a mixtape - and by mixtape, I mean an actual cassette tape, called The Search & The Seizure mixtape which sees the duo re-working and re-interpreting a range of hip-hop classics on the A-Side, with the B-Side focusing on electro and indie-rock favorites.  The Santogold track above is taken from this release. I stumbled upon this recently on the internets. A new (to my ears) Little Dragon track “Infinite Love”. In reality it looks like this track has been floating around for a few months, I’m just late to the game. But oh well. If you’ve read this blog for a while you’ll know that I’m fairly obsessed with Little Dragon, so anything new from them is welcome to my ears. This track was included in an online campaign by Cartier called Love, and it’s a good midtempo slice of Little Dragon-esque electro-y soul.  You can download it below. Sadly the only version seems to be in 96kbps, but better than nothing eh?

I’m just discovering this rather old track and album for the first time. Modern Sleeping is the brainchild of one Cousin Jacob, whose real identity I shall not reveal, but suffice to say I’m mad at him for not sharing this with me sooner. Ha. Anyways, this particular track “Tax Cut” features the eclectic-ly chilled Luz Mob who is way overdue some new material as well. It’s a dreamily relaxed downtempo track and if you check out the album Positions & Practices For Better Living you’ll find more downtempo goodness created with real instruments (!) and some nice guest vocals courtesy of Pyeng Threadgill.

So I think this autotune thingamabob madness that’s going on is for the birds and am sad that Kanye has jumped on that bandwagon with such gusto. Producers just need to stop with it already. Please. And why is Kanye “singing” like his jaw is still wired shut? Young man needs to enunciate.

But having said that, I AM enjoying this LMFAO remix of Love Lockdown. I think it’s way better than the original. They took the lyrical concept and ran with it, adding some way better vocals and a bangin’ beat.I will give Kanye props for making the tracks available on his blog for folks to mess with though. That’s cool.
